Once you experience the incredible feelings associated with conquering any phobia, you very quickly begin to realize that there is nothing you can’t do and become empowered and motivated to create amazing results in your life. Here is a simple step by step process to overcome fear of driving and get you started on the path toward recovery.
The first step is to develop an understanding of your psychological, emotional, and mental relationship to driving. In order to do this, you will need to find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Sit back, relax, and close your eyes.
You may want to record this process onto a tape or mp3 player to use and aide you in the process. It may be more beneficial for you to have your spouse or a friend do it for you. Most people find it difficult to listen to their own voice as it makes them uncomfortable since we are not used to hearing ourselves talk. Do what ever you must to get the best results in order to overcome fear of driving.
Close your eyes and relax. Think back to a time when you experienced anxiety or fear while driving. Play the experience in your mind like a mini movie. Pay close attention to as much as possible. Some of the following details are important for you to look at and remember.
What does the movie look like? You should notice that the picture is big and right in front of you. You will also notice that you are looking through your own eyes as you watch. It is big, vivid, and in color most likely. Everything, including the sound of the movie, is sharp, clear, and very easy to notice and see.
Now that you know how you view images with a strong emotion attached to them, you can now use that same information to overcome fear of driving. Now, play the same movie again in your mind, but this time, watch the movie from someone else’s point of view. Imagine that you are someone else watching what is happening, and that as that person, or a passenger, you are calm, happy, relaxed, and peaceful.
Make sure to feel those positive emotions as strongly as possible, to look through your own eyes as the passenger at yourself, and to make the movie large, vivid, and very positive. If you have to, add laughter to the movie as you watch. Play this over a few times with the positive emotions as strongly as possible.
Now, go back to yourself behind the wheel, but keep those positive emotions. Now, imagine driving again while playing the movie in your mind just like you did before with the same size, vividness, and attention to details.
This time however, you want to bring along and plug in those positive emotions you felt while being a passenger. Feel happy, excited, relaxed, peaceful, and completely at ease as you drive. Play this movie over a few times in your mind until you are completely immersed in the movie in your mind and completely feel those positive emotions. Do this a few times each day and you will very quickly begin to overcome fear of driving with ease.
